Emotional neglect is when an individual’s affectional needs are disregarded, ignored or unappreciated by a significant other. Emotional neglect in childhood is frequently the cause of many undiagnosed learning disorders in adults.
Childhood emotional neglect causes as much long-term damage as physical abuse, but in most cases is invisible to the human eye.
One of many causes of emotional neglect is as a result of a lack of nurturing, connection and compassion which has a negative impact from childhood to adulthood. In most cases, most people who went through emotional neglect as a child (including me), don’t realise until it’s too late the long-term impact.
One thing most of us will have in common is not being able to take care of ourselves. Sufferers often find it difficult to say ‘no’ to others, and it’s very hard or even paralysing to ask for help and support.
